The reaction sequence shown takes place in two stages. The reagent for stage 1 is concentrated HSO.
stage 1: the skeletal structure of a terpene alcohol (an open chain bearing a terminal -CH2OH group and three C=C double bonds) with an arrow to a cyclised product bearing four C=C double bonds: one inside the new six-membered ring, one exocyclic double bond linking the ring to the side chain, and two further C=C double bonds along the side chain (one methyl-branched, one a terminal isopropylidene), labelled 'stage 1'
stage 2: the cyclised product from stage 1 with an arrow to a product where the ring and side chain instead carry several -OH groups in place of the C=C double bonds, labelled 'stage 2'
Which type of reaction is carried out in the two stages?
stage 1stage 2
