25Structural Geometric IsomerismHard1 mark
The formula of 11-cis-retinal is CHO. The structure of 11-cis-retinal consists of a cyclohexene ring and a long aliphatic side chain ending in an aldehyde group. The long aliphatic side chain contains one or more bonds. One bond is between carbons numbered 11 and 12. The arrangement is cis at this point. Which row is correct?
Table of rows A to D: the left column gives the total number of C=C double bonds in 11-cis-retinal (5 for rows A and B, 6 for rows C and D); the right column draws the arrangement around carbons 11 and 12 as R1-C=C-R2 with attached H atoms -- rows A and C show R1 and R2 both on the upper side and both H atoms on the lower side (the cis arrangement); rows B and D show R1 upper-left and R2 lower-right with the two H atoms on the opposite corners (the trans arrangement).
