Context for question 2
A student investigates the relationship between the extension of a spring and the mass suspended from the spring.
Context for 2(a)
Figure 2.1 shows the arrangement of the apparatus the student uses. The student:
  • measures the original length of the spring
  • attaches a mass of = 10 g to the spring
  • measures the new length of the spring
  • calculates the extension of the spring
  • repeats the procedure using masses of = 20 g, 30 g, 40 g and 50 g.
2(a)(i)Easy1 mark
On Figure 2.1, draw a double-headed arrow () to show the extension of the spring when mass is suspended from the spring.

2(a)(ii)Easy2 marks
Describe two techniques the student uses to measure accurately the length of the spring.

Your answer

2(b)(i)Easy1 mark
The student’s readings are shown in Table 2.1.
Table 2.1
mass / glength / cmextension / cm
01.90.0
102.40.5
202.80.9
303.31.4
403.7
504.22.3
Calculate the extension when a mass of 40 g is suspended from the spring. Use the equation:
Record your value in Table 2.1.
2(b)(ii)Medium3 marks
Plot a graph of extension e / cm (y-axis) against mass m / g (x-axis). Start the axes from the origin (0,0). Draw a best-fit straight line.

2(b)(iii)Medium3 marks
Use your graph to determine the length of the spring when a mass of 12 g is suspended from the spring. Show clearly on the graph how you obtained the necessary information.
2(c)Easy1 mark
Suggest one safety precaution the student takes when doing the experiment.
