Context for question 2
A student investigates the behaviour of a spring. Refer to Figure 2.1.
Figure 2.1, apparatus with a spring hanging from a clamp stand fixed to a bench with a G-clamp, next to a metre ruler reading 0 at the top and 100 at the bottom
2(a)(i)Easy2 marks
Describe two techniques the student uses when measuring the length of the spring to ensure an accurate reading. You may draw a diagram.

Your answer

2(a)(ii)Easy2 marks
Using Figure 2.2 record the initial length of the spring with no load. Do not include the loops at the ends of the spring in your measurement. Show clearly on Figure 2.2 how you made your measurement.
Figure 2.2, a close-up of the spring's top loop against a ruler scale marked in mm from 34 to 40, with the top of the coil (excluding the loop) level just above the 35 mark

Your answer

2(b)Easy2 marks
The student:
  • suspends a load = 1.0 N from the spring
  • records the new length of the spring in Table 2.1
  • calculates the extension of the spring using the equation
  • records the value of in Table 2.1
  • repeats the procedure using loads = 2.0 N, 3.0 N, 4.0 N and 5.0 N.
Complete Table 2.1.
Table 2.1, listing load L in N (1.0 to 5.0), the spring length l in mm (42, 61, 82, 107, 125) and a blank column for the extension x in mm to be completed
Answer (x values for all five rows)
2(c)(i)Medium4 marks
Plot a graph of / N (y-axis) against / mm (x-axis). Start the axes from the origin (0, 0). Draw the best-fit line.
